What is Sports Massage?

A form of massage which utilises specific techniques and stretches to help obtain maximum performance and physical conditioning with less chance of injury or pain. It increases power, endurance, and flexibility both before and after an event or workout.

Although sports massage was initially aimed at people who regularly push their bodies through strenuous exercise, it can be useful for anyone. Whether you're running around with small children all the time, or you have a physically demanding job, a regular sports massage may help you.

There are four main types of sports massage:

What are the benefits of a sports massage?

  1. -Pre-event massage: A short 15-45-minute massage before a sports event, which focuses on the muscles that will be used during the event.

  1. -Post-event massage: A longer massage, usually lasting anywhere between one and two hours that aims to aid the body in its immediate recovery.

  2. -Restorative massage: given during training to allow the athlete to train harder and with less injury.

  3. -Rehabilitative massage: aimed at alleviating pain due to injury and returning the body to health.

  • Relax your muscles

  • Fight fatigue

  • Relieve any swelling you have around your joints

  • Boost circulation and the immune system so that the body heals more quickly

  • Improve your flexibility and body strength

  • Make it easier for you to recover more quickly after you've done strenuous exercise

  • Makes it less likely you'll get more injuries by getting rid of the tension in the muscles

What makes our sessions different? At Jigsaw we go that extra mile…

Prior to getting hands on, your practitioner will ask you questions concerning your expectations and your goals. They will also ask questions regarding daily routines/habits, occupation, leisure and sports activities so to better to understand what you are putting your body through; so that they can build an image of how your body functions and the best way to help optimise your body via treatment.

Your practitioner will assess the areas which are troubling you and carry out some tests to the muscles, they will then carry out the treatment and will assess the same areas after treatment so you can see the progress.

After treatment we may also set you some simple exercises and give you some advice on how to keep your mobile and pain free. In most cases treatments will vary to some extent session to session as you may find your goals or circumstances may have changed and therefore, they may need to address different areas or stresses.
