Non-surgical solutions to persistent problems

Extracorporeal Shockwave therapy (ESWT) Is a non-invasive treatment where a hand held-device is applied outside the body, introducing energy to painful areas and promoting the body to heal itself. Regardless of the cause; injuries can be debilitating and if left untreated may affect your daily life.

Shockwave is a non-surgical non-invasive treatment option for a wide variety of conditions with no down time. Having a long term injury many people think that surgery is their only option to get better but there is risk involved in a long recovery time associated with this. “Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) offers 2 main advantages over traditional surgical methods: fewer potential complications and fast return to normal activity”.

  • Fast treatments times

What are shockwaves?
Shock waves are high-energy sound waves which are transmitted to the affected area to accelerate healing. The treatment increases blood flow, decreases localised pain and stimulates cell regeneration - this encourages the body to repair itself. Shock waves also breakdown injured tissue and calcification.

How successful is treatment?
Statistics show over 90 percent of patients experience a reduction in their pain. In patients that suffer from plantar fasciitis and heel pain related problems, pain reduction is remarkable, 39 studies showed a success rate of 94% in Plantar Faciitis. The overall success rates for all indications ranges between 60% to 90% depending on the conditions treated.

Can Shockwave treat old/persistent injuries?
Shock waves can treat both long term chronic conditions and newer injuries, there is a great deal of evidence to show that Shockwave Therapy can achieve great results even with historical conditions.

Is this the right treatment for me?
Our clinicians are always an email or phone call away, feel free to get in contact with the team to see if Shockwave therapy is the right approach for you.

What makes our sessions different? At Jigsaw we go that extra mile…
After our initial consultation which includes our medical case history, orthopaedic tests and examinations we will go though what options are available to you. If Shockwave therapy is indicated you will have treatment on the same visit. We use a combined approach at the clinic which means you will also receive hands on treatment as well as an exercise rehabilitation plan to facilitate effective results and to get you out of pain faster.

Is Shockwave Therapy safe?
Yes. It has NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) guidance for a large number of conditions and is used within the NHS. Shockwave therapy performed by qualified therapists is largely risk free.

Is shockwave painful?
You may experience some discomfort during treatment, but the pain should be tolerable. Due to the analgesic effect of Shockwave Therapy many patients report immediate pain relief following treatments.

How many sessions are needed?
The amount of treatment sessions will vary dependent on the type of shockwave used and conditions being treated. As a general rule 3 to 6 treatment sessions is advised. As this is encouraging the body to heal itself, your body will progress in the healing process even 6 to 8 weeks after treatment has stopped.
